READ: ‘The Avengers’ Is Tracking To Open Appropriately Huge

We’re about two and a half weeks away from the opening of The Avengers. Are you going to the midnight screening? I am, hopefully. In all honesty, I can’t wait. I haven’t been this excited for a big blockbuster since Deathly Hallows P2. Ya, not even an entire year. Deal with it.

So of course, the closer we get to the day the more and more will we be inundated with everything and anything Avengers. Today the tracking was released for the film. Last week they were reporting that an $125 million opening weekend was in play. Now? Well, it’s tracking to best The Hunger Games and, maybe, top The Dark Knight…with an outside shot at roaring past Deathly Hallows P2. Honestly, if this thing does $200 million, I would not be surprised. WAIT, COME BACK!

That’s a ridiculous number, for sure, but remember when $150 for The Dark Knight seemed ridiculous and unattainable and then it like, happened, and shit. My reasoning is that not only has the marketing for the film been absolutely on point but as The Hollywood Reporter points out, it’s hitting every single quadrant, target point, demographic – all of it. Women, men, gay, straight, young, old, black, white – everyone cares about this film. Two friends of mine are pining to see the film, both female, and both having never see an Iron Man or Captain America prior to this film. That’s saying something. I’m not saying $200 million IS going to happen, BUT, if let’s say it did… I wouldn’t be surprised.

Now, where does this leave everything else? Well I still think The Amazing Spider-Man will do well, but it could still be “too soon” for some audiences. I don’t think that’s the case, of course, but Spider-Man 3 was only in 2006 (off of the top of my head) and it left quite a bitter taste in the mouths of audiences and fans. But I think the marketing will pick up. As for The Dark Knight? Well everyone knows this will be big. And I think it’ll clear $125 million with ease. But, I don’t know. I’m just not THAT excited for the film. Offer me any other big film of the summer and I get a boner… but The Dark Knight is leaving me with the case of the downs and I don’t know why. I don’t.

At the end of the day, what I am most excited for with the release and hopeful success of The Avengers is that the mass public will get a taste of Joss. If you’re a fan of Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, The Cabin In The Woods, anything from his canon, you know. You just know. That is what I say when someone mentions something that Joss has been involved with.“I know”. We, the collective Whedon fan base, know what he does, how he does it, and why he does it so well. So, if The Avengers lives up to the hype? Well, I already knew that.
